Former Suns’ head coach Monty Williams has agreed to a six-year, $72 million deal with the Detroit Pistons. This makes Monty the highest paid coach in the NBA.

Monty offers nine years worth of head coaching experience, as he spent five seasons with the Hornets before taking over the Suns in 2019.

While with the Suns, Monty finished three of four seasons with a winning record and reached the NBA Finals in 2021. However, after this finals experience, the Suns suffered two consecutive blowout playoff losses, which would ultimately push him out of Phoenix.

Now, Monty has yet another opportunity to rebuild a damaged team and make them a playoff contender. Last year, the Pistons finished with the worst record in the NBA at 17-65.

This abysmal record is eerily similar to the Suns’ 2018 record, where they finished 19-63.

For this reason, the Pistons have high hopes that Monty can bring similar success to Detroit.
