It was a big day in the Phoenix Suns’ franchise history as they traded for superstar forward Kevin Durant along with ex-former Sun T.J. Warren. In return, the Suns gave up 4 unprotected 1st round picks, Mikal Bridges, Cam Johnson, and Jae Crowder.

It was one of the biggest midseason trade acquisitions in franchise history and NBA history. The crazy part about all of this is there was still doubt that it would happen.

With this doubt creeping into the Suns brass, the Suns were ready to pivot and go all in on acquiring John Collins from the Atlanta Hawks according to ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski on the Keyshawn JWill & Max podcast.

Mat Ishbia’s aggressiveness to give up a lot to get Kevin Durant, all of that, at once, led to very late Wednesday night when Phoenix and Ishbia and James Jones were pretty close to pivoting to do a John Collins deal in Atlanta,” Wojnarowski said. “I think they were going to do a three-way deal through Detroit, and then they re-engaged with the Nets late Wednesday night.”

It would’ve been crazy to see the Suns trade for Collins given the fact that they just played the Hawks last night. Instead, the Suns ended up getting their guy and a top 5 player they’ve wanted since last offseason to kick start Ishbia’s first day on the job as the new owner.
