Mercury Tied for Seventh Seed After 86-74 win

With their top players out the Phoenix, Mercury beat the Dallas Wings 86-74. Phoenix is tied with the New York Liberty for the seventh seed with one game left in the season.

The Mercury started the third quarter on a 16-5 run; they went on to outscore the WInins 28-14 in the third period. Diamond DeShields scored a game-high 24 points and 16 of this points game in the third quarter. Phoenix needed players to step up with Diana Taurasi and Skylar Diggins-Smith, and DeShields answered the call.

Shey Peddy has been playing well of late and added 18 points, five rebounds, and eight assists. She has really stepped her game up. Sophie Cunningham scored 16 and 12 of those points game for three-point shots. The big surprise came from second-year player Jennie Simms; she scored 14 points on 6-10, shooting from the field and grabbed four rebounds in 34 minutes. The Mercury had a lot of players step up to the challenge.

Phoenix has been through a lot this season but continues to show mental toughness and play well; it is very impressive. Also impressive is the way Phoenix shoot the ball; the Mercury shot 51.5% from the field and 50% from the three-point line. It was a big-time win for the Mercury.

The Mercury did an excellent job on Tearia McCowan, holding her only to seven points. Kayla Thornton led Dallas in scoring with 14 points. Allisha Gray added 13 points, and Marina Mabrey scored 10 points on 4-12 shooting.

Phoenix will close the season out at home against the Chicago Sky on Sunday. After that, we will see if they will clinch a playoff berth.
