For fans who grew up listening to games on the radio, McCoy wasn’t just a broadcaster. He was the connection between the team and the community, turning routine plays into unforgettable memories with his voice. McCoy’s tenure with the Suns stretched 51 years, a run nearly unmatched in professional sports. His signature catchphrases, delivered with energy and warmth, became part of the team’s culture. Whether it was a fast-break finish or a clutch three-pointer, and with the classic, “Shazam!” over the radio, his call brought life to every moment.

For many fans, McCoy’s broadcasts were their introduction to the Suns. Long before streaming and constant television coverage, his play-by-play painted the game in vivid detail, making listeners feel as though they were sitting courtside.

Al McCoy’s larger than life legacy:

By honoring Al McCoy on National Radio Day, the Suns are doing more than recognizing a legendary career. They’re acknowledging the role he played in shaping generations of fandom. For Phoenix, his voice was the soundtrack of countless seasons, through highs, lows, and unforgettable runs. The tribute is a reminder that while voices come and go, some legacies are timeless. For Suns fans, Al McCoy will always be that voice.
