PHOENIX – Through rebuilds, coaching changes, and roster instability, Devin Booker has become the face of the franchise and the superstar Suns fans believed could eventually deliver a championship. That is why Suns legend and NBA analyst Charles Barkley’s recent criticism landed with unusual force. Barkley was not attacking Booker’s talent, but how he was utilizing it in the 2026 NBA playoffs in the first round against the Oklahoma City Thunder.

Charles Barkley calls out Devin Booker after NBA playoffs:

Charles Barkley spoke to Arizona Sports Bickley & Marrotta and essentially argued that franchise players cannot disappear when postseason pressure peaks. Barkley’s point was rooted in responsibility. Superstars are measured differently, especially in Phoenix, where basketball history is defined more by unforgettable individual performances than championships. That comparison matters because Barkley understands the emotional contract between being a basketball star in the Valley. During his era, Phoenix embraced his intensity, even in playoff losses, because fans believed he emptied everything onto the floor. His message to Booker was simple that losing is survivable, passivity is not.

The numbers partially support Barkley’s frustration. Booker faced aggressive double teams and defensive traps throughout the 2026 playoffs, leading to inconsistent scoring stretches and fewer takeover moments late in games. But statistics alone are not what frustrated Phoenix fans. It was the visible hesitation and deferring to others around him. Great scorers can miss shots and still control games emotionally. Barkley believes Booker surrendered too much control.

That is why this conversation carries weight beyond one playoff exit. Booker is no longer being evaluated as an emerging star; he is being evaluated against the Suns’ history itself by the legends who made it happen.
