BALTIMORE — It didn’t take long for former Arizona Diamondbacks utilityman Blaze Alexander to make an immediate impact with his new team on Opening Day.

After being traded to the Baltimore Orioles in a February deal that prioritized bullpen depth for Arizona, Alexander delivered an instant return for his new club. Stepping into the starting lineup, he played second base and went 1-for-3 with an RBI.
Beyond the box score, Alexander showcased the defensive versatility that complements his offense — the very profile that made him valuable for the D-Backs and attractive to the Orioles.
This was exactly what Baltimore envisioned when they traded for the utility player, particularly given their injury challenges.

For Arizona, the trade reflected club priorities in the offseason. The Diamondbacks acknowledged the difficulty of moving Alexander, but pitching depth was a greater organizational need.
In return for Alexander, Arizona received right-hander Kade Strowd and two prospects, reflecting how much Alexander’s value had risen with his late-season performance. While Strowd posted strong numbers with Baltimore — a 1.71 ERA over 26.1 innings — his spring training was not enough to earn him a roster spot to start the year, posting a 10.57 ERA over 7.2 innings.

Alexander once represented a familiar type of player — a homegrown, multi-positional contributor who became expendable on a win-now roster during the second half of the 2025 season. He finished that year with a .230 average, seven home runs, and a .706 OPS. While modest, those numbers kept the Snakes connected to him through the end of the season.

While this is just one game out of 162, the payoff from the trade remains to be fully seen. But for those who have followed Alexander’s growth and development, it isn’t surprising that he’s found his footing so quickly in Maryland.
