GLENDALE – It took nearly four weeks and over a dozen of candidates and interviews for the Arizona Cardinals to land new head coach Mike LaFleur. During Tuesday’s introductory press conference, LaFleur delivered an opening statement full of passion and hope that many fans across the Valley have been starved of for years.

The 38-year-old’s drive was apparent, and general manager Monti Ossenfor discussed that part of his personality was a huge part of the franchise hiring him.

Ossenfort on the reason LaFleur was hired:

“Mike was impressive from the start. When we went through that process, like Michael said, we knew it was going to be long. It was going to be exhausting. The point of our process was to find the best fit for us. When we talked to any candidate, can we envisioned this person leading our football program.

“The first time we spoke to Mike was over Zoom, and when we were able to get him in the building, it was apparent we could easily see him as our head coach and leading us into the future.”

LaFleur comes from an impressive coaching tree that includes Sean McVay, Kyle Shanahan, Robert Saleh and Dan Quinn, all of who the new head coach thanked during his opening statement. Plenty of current NFL head coaches come from those four coaches, with Arizona becoming the latest one.

When Ossenfort spoke at the beginning of January of what the Cardinals coaching search would look like one word kept appearing: extensive. The fourth-year general manager knew the process would take a while, which is surprising as this hiring would make or break his job. LaFleur was one of the first names he interviewed on Zoom, but Ossenfort needed to make sure.

Even after their two-day in-person interview, the franchise needed to check all boxes, which LaFleur understood. Despite all the countless interviews, Ossenfort and his team returned to LaFleur as their top choice to be the 44th head coach in franchise history.
