GLENDALE – Many outside source have confirmed quarterback Kyler Murray’s status for Monday’s Week 9 game vs. the Dallas Cowboys, but Arizona Cardinals head coach spoke with the media on Thursday to give his assessment. Gannon stated that the team is trying to get Murray fully healthy before being renamed the starter. The 28-year-old has missed the last two weeks due to a foot injury, where the team went 0-2.

In the final 10 weeks of the season, Gannon is hoping the bye week wasn’t just enough for Murray to be healthy, but for the roster as a whole.

Gannon on how to prepare Murray for return:

“Get him fully healthy, play,” Gannon said. “You start playing games and the train’s rolling I think for everybody. They’re rested and it looks a little bit different, so it was very beneficial.”

Gannon is likely trying to keep Murray’s status a mystery for a tactical advantage, but many reports have indicated that the former number one pick will be back as the starter. Gannon will need him for Week 9 as he has a coaching record of 1-10 without Murray, with the offense averaging only 18.27 points per game. Despite backup quarterback Jacoby Brissett’s stellar production in his two starts, Gannon will be happy to see his two-time Pro Bowler back under center.

At 2-5, Arizona will have a rough uphill climb to reach its first postseason appearance in four years. Gannon has been a part of past coaching staffs, like the 2021 Philadelphia Eagles, that has had that same record and made the postseason. The Cardinals will have six more division games, plenty of opportunities to gain ground in the tough NFC West.

The Cardinals will need Murray’s return to his home state to be a revival of the franchise this season to get his team back on track.
