GLENDALE – The heartbreak just keeps on coming for the Arizona Cardinals. Head coach Jonathan Gannon announced on Wednesday that running back Trey Benson will be placed on injury reserve, putting him out of action for a while. Benson can still return sometime during the 2025 season, but with the lost of James Conner already, Arizona is scrambling to find its new RB1.

Who will step up for Cardinals?

The safe answer is Emari Demercado. The third-year Cardinals running back signed with the team as an undrafted free agent in 2023. In his first two years, the 26-year-old was a dynamic back, as he recorded 507 rushing yards on 82 carries for 6.2 yards per attempt.

At 5’9, Demercado is undersized compared to Conner and Benson, but has the same muscle mass at 215 pounds. His stout frame negates his height and allows him to possess speed and power in the run game. Demercado will have the trust of the offensive coordinator Drew Petzing to understand the system moving forward.

Michael Carter just signed to the 53-man roster, which makes him a viable option for the coaching staff. He joined the franchise in 2023 and had limited usage in his time. Carter failed to make the roster this past preseason, but injuries have opened the door for a return.

However, a more interesting option for Arizona is the player it decided to keep over Carter in the preseason. Bam Knight was a Darkhorse to make the 53-man roster in August, but an unreal preseason made it a no-brainer to keep him on the roster.

On 12 carries, Knight had 85 rushing yards over expected, which lead the preseason. He finished with 138 yards total and made his presence felt on the Cardinals. Knight has been used strictly as a kick return specialist, but the injury to Benson could open the door for him to be used in the backfield.
