However, head coach Jonathan Gannon has mentioned that the injuries haven’t scared him off on playing starters, as quarterback Kyler Murray and company will lead the way in the preseason opener against the Kansas City Chiefs.

Gannon on playing Cardinals starters:

“I think it’s the best thing for our team this year, Honestly. I think we’re at a good point with our health. We’re at a good point with our development and I think that’s this year with our team. It’s the best thing to do for our guys.”

Gannon’s mindset has infected the team as wide receiver Zay Jones discussed the excitement around the locker room ahead of Saturday’s game against the AFC champions. The game against Kansas City will be the first time for Arizona too showcase their new and highly-invested defense against a title contender.

General manager Monti Ossenfort spent plenty of resources this offseason to improve on the defense. Six draft picks focused on defensive players, while massive contracts thrown at Pro Bowlers like Josh Sweat to help elevate one of the worst pass rushes from 2024.

“I want to see us operate, make sure that we’re doing the right things,” Gannon said. “And, again, we’re not game planning. We’re not going to gameplan Kansas City or Denver or Vegas, so it’s really kind of about us, and make sure that we’re learning from those reps.”

The first step making the postseason for the first time since 2021 starts this weekend. The franchise have invested a lot of equity behind Gannon’s belief in his system. In his third season, the 42-year-old head coach has his first real opportunity to shine in the spotlight as the face of a team contending.
