GLENDALE – Another major injury strikes the Arizona Cardinals with wide receiver Michael Wilson being put in concussion protocol. Wilson suffered the injury when he attempted to catch a loose ball and hit his head against the right knee of safety Budda Baker. The 25-year-old headed to the locker room, while Baker stood up and limped to the sidelined.

Cardinals head coach Jonathan Gannon on Wilson’s injury:
“I told Mike, I mean it’s unfortunate what happened, but he can’t … that’s why I want him to stay up. I know it’s hard. That’s their instincts to go dive for the ball, but in practice, that can lead to some contact that you don’t want to have happen. So, I don’t fault him, but I don’t want him going to the ground, either.”

Baker is okay, but Wilson will be joining his teammate Marvin Harrison Jr. on the sideline, who has missed three straight practices. Harrison has missed the few days of training camp with a sore knee and an illness, while Wilson will likely be out for over a week as he recovers from his head injury.
“Guys got to get in there and show what they can do,” Gannon said. “It doesn’t matter really how you get your opportunity — what do you do with it? So, there’ll be guys in and out of the lineup today. We’re mixing and matching a little bit today, putting some pressure, hopefully creates some pressure and anxiety with some guys to move around different spots, see how they respond.”

Gannon has the next man up mentality, which has been what the Cardinals have been forced to adapt with the many injuries so far this training camp. Players have had torn ACLs, been hospitalized and other variety of injures that have Arizona grasping for a replacement. The team is trying to survive to make it to opening week against the New Orleans Saints, where it hopes to have Wilson return from concussion protocol.
