GLENDALE – Three-time Pro Bowl and All-Pro safety Tyrann Mathieu announced his retirement on Instagram on Tuesday. The Arizona Cardinals took a chance on Tyrann Mathieu in the 3rd round of the 2013 NFL draft, after behavioral issues caused the talented safety to fall in the draft. Under the tutelage of head coach Bruce Arians, the Honey Badger became one of the most elite safeties in the NFL.

Former Cardinals All-Pro announces retirement:

In his five-year career in the Valley, Mathieu recorded 11 interceptions, 41 pass deflections and 308 tackles. He and CB Patrick Peterson led the Cardinals defense to an NFC Championship appearance, before falling short to Cam Newton and the Carolina Panthers. Now, Mathieu and Peterson retire together in the same offseason, a poetic end to that era of Cardinals teams.

Mathieu would get another shot at a ring, after a short one-year stint with Houston in 2018, he would join the Kansas City Chiefs the following season and win his first and lone Super Bowl against the San Francisco 49ers. In the Big Game, Mathieu had six total tackles on the way to victory.

The 5’9 safety had done it all in his career and decided to finish up back home in Louisiana with the New Orleans Saints. Mathieu spent the final three years with the Saints, where he recorded 10 interceptions, 24 pass deflections and 228 tackles to put a cap on his illustrious career in the NFL.
