Arizona State lands a visit from former 5-star recruit from Texas

Arizona State - Johntay Cook possible transfer

TEMPE — Spring transfer portal for football has been hectic to say the least. And among the craziness, Arizona State football looks to be making a push for one of the highest names in the transfer portal, with University of Texas wide receiver Johntay Cook II expected to visit Tempe this weekend, according to a report by Anwar Richardson.

Cook, a former five-star recruit from DeSoto High School in Texas and one of the most electric receivers of the 2023 class, entered the spring transfer portal earlier this week after playing just one season with the Longhorns. Despite the limited playing time, logging only four games, he finished the 2024 season with 137 yards, averaging 17.1 yards per carry.

Since entering the portal, Cook has drawn significant interest from big programs such as Houston, Oklahoma, BYU, Syracuse, Indiana, and Arkansas. However, his visit to Arizona State offers a major opportunity for the Sun Devils and coach Kenny Dillingham to land a player with game-elevating potential.

At 6-foot and 185 pounds, Cook demonstrated elite speed, route-running, a play-making abilities — all traits the Sun Devils are looking to add as they grow into an offensive powerhouse. And with Sam Leavitt at quarterback, Cook’s skill set could help shape the success of this new and improved roster.

Arizona State is hoping a weekend in the Valley will be enough to lure him west. Hopefully, they are right.
