Arizona State Football senior running back Cam Skattebo was disappointingly left off the Heisman finalists’ lists Monday.

Among the selectees was Oregon senior quarterback Dillon Gabriel. Gabriel has bested Skattebo in a number of categories this season: a higher seed in the College Football Playoff, a better record and being considered for college football’s most prestigious honors.

There is a possibility that Arizona State’s lead man will get an opportunity to get a shot at Gabriel, with both the Ducks and Sun Devils on paths to collide in the CFBP semifinal in the Good Year Cotton Bowl. Tough battles lie ahead for both teams before that possibility can even be considered; however, Skattebo does have something he can hang over Gabriel’s head: a first team All-America selection.

Skattebo was named to CBS’ 2024 All-America first team on Wednesday. Gabriel was named to the second team.

Skattebo doesn’t get to go to New York with the Heisman finalists, but he does get to join them on this list.

The senior joins all of the award’s finalists on CBS’ list. Heisman hopefuls Boise State junior running back Ashton Jeanty, Colorado junior cornerback and wide receiver Travis Hunter, and Miami senior quarterback Cam Ward all stand alongside Skattebo as first team selections, while Gabriel is the lone finalist on the second team.

Skattebo made his way to the first team with 1,568 rushing yards and 19 rushing touchdowns on 63 carries combined with an additional 506 yards and three touchdowns receiving. He led the Sun Devils to a Big 12 title and the fourth seed in the playoffs. Gabriel completed 297-406 passes for 3,774 passing yards, 28 touchdowns, six interceptions, and rushed for seven touchdowns for the undefeated Ducks to secure the top spot in the CFBP.

The All-America selection may not hold as much weight as the Heisman, but at least it’s something Skattebo can say he has that Gabriel doesn’t.
