With two years still remaining on his current contract, Phoenix Suns superstar Kevin Durant is eligible for a one-year extension worth $59.7 million in the 2026-27 season.

Durant, who just turned 36 yesterday, is not stressing the extension.

“I got two years left on my contract,” Durant said at Suns media day Monday. “I’m focused on being the best I can every day in the moment. We’ll figure out that stuff when it’s time.”

Due to the “over-38 rule,” the Suns can only offer Durant this one-year extension, which he became eligible for on July 12 and would have until Oct. 21 to sign it. The over-38 rule means teams can’t offer four-year or longer contracts to players 38 years or older during the contract.

As expected, the Suns’ leadership did not say much on the extension.

“Kevin Durant loves it here,” Suns owner Mat Ishbia said. “We love Kevin Durant. We talk to him and his agent, Rich Kleiman, all the time. We don’t really go through contract extensions publicly, but I’ll tell you this, Kevin loves it. We love Kevin. We plan on Kevin being here, and nothing is changing with that.”

Durant will become eligible for a longer extension next summer (two years), which would explain why the Suns might just wait. He is currently on the third year of a four-year, $194 million deal.

The Suns have been very fond of what Durant has brought to the table during his 1.5 seasons with the team so far.

“We love having KD here. We want him here,” Suns president of basketball operations and general manager James Jones said. “We’ll figure that out. Like Mat said, we don’t really talk about that publicly, but the thing we do talk about publicly is, like, who really wants to be here and who is a great fit for us? We love KD, he loves being here, that goes without saying.”
