Diamondbacks send down Tommy Henry, call up Brandon Hughes

Arizona Diamondbacks left-hander Tommy Henry watches Lenyn Sosa round the bases after hitting a three-run home run.

Henry’s struggles came to a head after a rough start against the Phillies on Saturday, allowing four runs in 3 2/3 innings. In nine games, seven of them starts, he has a 7.08 ERA. In 38 2/3 innings, he’s surrendered 49 hits with nine of them leaving the ballpark. His departure leaves a hole in the Diamondbacks rotation that will need to be filled.

One possibility for Arizona would be to activate Zac Gallen from the 15-day injured list. While he wouldn’t be fully stretched out coming out in the next turn through the rotation, as he threw a three-inning simulated game on Tuesday, he could an option to replace Henry in the starting rotation when his turn comes up in the series against Oakland. The Diamondbacks will have to maneuver their rotation to fit in Gallen, but thanks to the off day on Monday they have some flexibility.

Hughes is up for the third time this season. In nine appearances, he has a 10.13 ERA in 10 2/3 innings. He’s been mostly asked to pitch in mop-up situations, although he has two starts as an opener against the Dodgers on the season. Hughes has been scoreless in five of his nine games. In the four appearances he’s allowed a run, opponents have scored at least three runs in three of them.

Until they decide on what to do with the rotation, and who takes Henry’s spot, the Diamondbacks will carry Hughes as an extra reliever. Before the game, they only had one left-handed reliever on the roster.
