With one more spot on their 15-man roster available, the Phoenix Suns’ search for someone to fill the vacancy will reportedly not be a particular veteran guard.

After The Athletic senior lead NBA insider Shams Charania broke the news that the Atlanta Hawks have waived Patty Mills, John Gambadoro of Arizona Sports 98.7 FM denounced any speculation about the Suns possibly signing him.

“A lot of people asking so instead of answering each individually I will do it here,” Gambadoro said via X (formerly Twitter). “The Suns will not pursue Patty Mills.”

Mills, 35, is in his 15th year in the NBA as he played 19 games this season with the Hawks prior to being waived. He averaged 2.7 points, 1.1 rebounds and 0.7 assists per game in his short stint in Atlanta.

More known for his time on the San Antonio Spurs in which he spent 10 seasons (2011-21) there, Mills’ role has been known as a serviceable bench piece who can consistently shoot from behind the arc.

Across 879 games in his career, he has averaged 8.9 points, 2.2 assists, 1.7 rebounds and is a 39% three-point shooter. The Australian native began his NBA journey with the Portland Trail Blazers (2009-11) and also played for the Brooklyn Nets (2021-23).

With Gambadoro ruling out Mills becoming a Sun, Phoenix will have to assess their options on who to add for the final roster spot before two hard deadlines.

Tomorrow is March 1, the cutoff date that a player can be waived by one team and remain eligible to play in the postseason for another. Then on April 9, that is the last day a team can sign somebody that will be eligible for the playoffs.
