The Sun Devils Are The Comeback Kids

The Sun Devils, with their comeback win over Stanford yesterday, have three wins when losing at halftime this season. Stanford, SMU, and UMass-Lowell are the three wins. They are also the three games inside six points. Arizona State was down by nine to Stanford and UMass-Lowell at halftime, while they were only down three to SMU.

Arizona State was also down 10 with five minutes to play versus Stanford. They were down 11 with 2:16 to go in their game against UMass-Lowell. The Sun Devils were also down 15 in the second half versus SMU but went on a 17-2 run to tie it with five minutes to play.

This isn’t the only crazy mark for Bobby Hurley’s team. In Hurley’s tenure, the Sun Devils have won 42 games when trailing at halftime. That number leads the Pac-12. It is also the 19th road win when Hurley’s Sun Devils are down at half.

This is due to stars like Frankie Collins, who just knows how to take the ball away down the stretch. It also comes down to players making those clutch shots when they need to. Last night, Adam Miller, Alonzo Gaffney, and Frankie Collins hit massive shots to keep the game close. Whenever it felt like Stanford would run away with it. Stanford turned a three-point game into a ten-point game late in last night’s game, but Miller and Gaffney hit clutch shots to bring it back to one and eventually tie it up.

We haven’t seen that from Arizona State players this year, especially in big games, so the Sun Devils have lost many games versus top-tier opponents. When ASU goes down big, they stay down and haven’t been able to go on runs, so this was a fantastic sign. The comeback kids came to play this weekend, so we hope to see that more down the stretch.

Arizona State’s Bobby Hurley has an Impressive Resume In Close Games
