Devin Booker and Bradley Beal did not play. Grayson Allen and Eric Gordon started in their place.

What did the Suns show us in this game?

Kevin Durant Is Unstoppable Even As The Solo Star

This is not new information as Kevin Durant has been a scoring machine for a decade and a half now. Last night was just a reminder of what he is capable of when he needs to put the team on his back. The Lakers came out very aggressive on the defensive end with the intention of making the game ugly. They were able to succeed in the first quarter as both teams shot under 30% from the floor. The second quarter is where things turned around.

Kevin Durant went 7/7 from the field in the second quarter.

Kevin Durant’s shot chart from the second quarter provided by ESPN.

He was able to adjust to the Lakers defense and make tough shot after tough shot. Well, what’s considered a tough shot for most players. What makes players like Durant so tough to guard is that they are good at the “bad” shots.

Defenses want players to shoot contested jump shots. Durant at his height and skill is able to shoot those shots with no problem. No matter who is defending him. There will be lineups during the season where only one of the “big three” is out there. Durant continues to show that the Suns will be fine in those minutes where he is the only all-star on the court.

Drew Eubanks Should Start Against Certain Teams

Drew Eubanks played really well in the preseason and had his best game against the Lakers. Against Los Angeles, Eubanks had seven points, nine rebounds, six assists, and a plus/minus of +25. He provides an athletic element that is not there with Jusuf Nurkic. Nurkic can’t finish over rotating defenders in this way.

When the Suns are matched up against teams with athletic big men like Anthony Davis, Jaxson Hayes, and Christian Wood. Eubanks has the ability to keep up with those players up and down the court and also guard them on the perimeter.

Nurkic brings a high level of basketball IQ to any line-up he is in. The Suns will not lose anything in that department when Eubanks starts.  He is a very good passer from the high post. Eubanks has the ability find cutters for easy back door lay-ups or hit the open three point shooter if the defense collapses in the paint. Don’t be surprised if Eubanks gets some starts this season even when Nurkic is healthy.

The Regular Season is Here!

The regular season is now upon us. The biggest takeaway from the preseason is that the Phoenix Suns can be successful in multiple ways. No matter what a team throws at them, they will have a way to answer it. This season will be fun, let the games begin.
