WATCH: Arizona State QB Trenton Bourguet Welcomes Competition of QB Battle

ASU QB Trenton Bourguet talks about how he grew up in a family of competition and how that plays into the ongoing QB battle.

After being a backup his whole Sun Devil career, Bourguet replaced Emory Jones as the starter halfway through the year last season. Now, new coach and QB guru Kenny Dillingham brought in two big competitors to challenge Bourguet’s starting spot: Notre Dame transfer Drew Pyne and highly-touted freshman Jaden Rashada.

Before the additions of Pyne and Rashada, the job was, and still potentially could be, considered to be his to lose. Bourguet threw for 1490 yards, 11 touchdowns and six interceptions in six games played last season. He was one of two Pac-12 QBs to complete over 70% of their passes last year, joining Oregon QB Bo Nix, who played under Dillingham as his offensive coordinator.

Notes from his impressive spring game performance in April:

Bourguet threw two touchdowns in the spring game and was the best quarterback out of both teams, as ASU continues its QB battle between Bourguet, Drew Pyne and Jaden Rashada. He was poised in the pocket and looked comfortable in Dillingham’s new offense. He also appeared confident as a leader for his team, taking control of the flow of the game many times.

Bourguet has always been confident in himself and the 5-foot-11 Marana product bet on himself this season, as he stuck with the Sun Devils despite two elite quarterback editions.

“Definitely wanted to be a Sun Devil, never had a thought in my mind about leaving or anything,” Bourguet said. “It didn’t matter who they brought in or who stayed. I think this a great place to play football with a great community and great fanbase. Just very blessed with this opportunity and excited to start competing in fall camp.”
